Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!
This week on Tuesday April 30, the Vietnamese will remember 49 years of the country of Vietnam fell into communist regime. Let us pray for the people of Vietnam that they will have religious freedom and basic human rights. There are many people who are hungry in Vietnam, and may the government open their hearts and minds to help those people who are living in the destitute situations. This Saturday, May 4 at 6:30pm, the Vietnamese community will have a Marian Procession to honor Our Lady of La Vang during the Month of Mary in May. I invite all of you to pray for peace in the world especially in Ukraine and Middle East that wars may ne ended. Please continue to help our Bishop with 2024 PSA and our parish. May the Lord through the intercession of Our Lady of La Vang grant you peace, love and joy!
Today’s Scripture selections emphasize the need for Christians to abide in Christ as a condition for producing fruits of kindness, mercy, charity and holiness. The first reading, taken from the Acts of the Apostles, testifies to the abundance of spiritual fruits yielded by the apostles because of their close bond to the risen Lord. The reading tells us how the Lord pruned the former Pharisee, Saul of Tarsus, a fanatic who had persecuted the Church, to produce a fruit-bearing branch called Paul, the zealous Apostle to the Gentiles, entirely dedicated to the proclamation of the Gospel. Even Paul’s forced return to Tarsus for a brief period is an example of God’s pruning of the vine to bring forth a greater harvest, namely, the mission to the Gentiles. In today’s second reading, John, in his first letter to the Church, explains that only when we remain united with Christ by putting our Faith in him and drawing our spiritual strength from him, will we be able to obey God’s commandments, especially the commandment of love. In the Gospel, taken from the Last Supper discourse, Jesus uses his favorite image of the vine and branches to help his disciples understand the closeness of their relationship with him and the need to maintain it. They are not simply rabbi and disciples. Their lives are mutually dependent - as close as a vine and its branches. In fact, in using this image, Jesus is explaining to them and to us what our relationship with him should be like.
The readings of this week give us the following points to ponder. We need pruning in our Christian lives. Cutting out of our lives everything that is contrary to the spirit of Jesus and renewing our commitment to Christian ideals every day is the first type of self-imposed pruning expected of us. A second means of pruning is to practice self-control over our evil inclinations, sinful addictions and aberrations. Cordial mingling with people of different cultures, races, religions and orientations in our neighborhood and society enables us to prune away our selfish and prejudicial tendencies as we treat others in the society with Christian charity and openness. Jesus prunes, purifies and strengthens us by allowing us to face pain and suffering, contradictions and difficulties with the courage of our Christian convictions. The four Gospels teach us how to become true disciples of Jesus and how to abide in him as branches abide in the main trunk of the vine, drawing their life from it.

Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến!
Thứ Ba tuần này kỷ niệm ngày 30 tháng tư, chúng ta kỷ niệm 49 năm ngày đen tối của đất nước Viet Nam. Nhiều người chúng ta đã rời Việt Nam từ năm 1975. Cuộc ra đi tỵ nạn đã làm cho nhiều người chết trên đường vượt biên, hay đi bộ sang biên giới Cam Bốt nhiều người đã bị hải tặc giết hại. Chúng ta hãy tưởng nhớ đến những anh hùng chiến sĩ đã hy sinh cho chính nghĩa tự do. Chúng ta hãy cầu nguyện cho đất nước Viet Nam được mau thoát cảnh điêu tàn nhiều người đang sống trong nghèo đói và ô nhiễm. Xin Chúa qua lời chuyển cầu của Đức Mẹ La Vang ban cho đất nước Viet Nam được mau thấy ngày hồi sinh. Thứ Bảy tuần này ngày 4 tháng 5, chúng ta sẽ rước kiệu kính Đức Mẹ nhân dịp tháng hoa. Xin quý đoàn thể có mặt trong nhà thờ trước 6pm chiều để chúng ta bắt đầu rước kiệu lúc 6:30pm chiều và sau đó là Thánh Lễ. Xin quý ông bà anh chị em tiếp tục đóng góp cho quỹ PSA 2024. Nguyện xin Chúa chúc lành cho toàn thể quý vị!
Chúa Nhật thứ Năm Phục Sinh hôm nay các bài đọc chú trọng đến việc các Kitô hữu cần sống thân mật với Chúa, đó là lý do để chúng ta sinh hoa kết quả là lòng thương xót bác ái và thánh thiện. Bài đọc thứ nhất trích từ sách Tông Ðồ Công Vụ chứng minh cho sự dồi dào hoa quả thánh thiện mà các tông đồ có được vì các Ngài sống rất thân mật với Chúa Kitô Phục Sinh. Bài đọc cũng cho chúng ta biết rằng Chúa đã cắt tỉa người cựu của nhóm Pharisiêu, Saulê ở thành Tarsê, một người quá khích đã bắt bớ Giáo Hội trở nên một cành sinh hoa kết quả gọi là Phaolô, người tông đồ nhiệt thành cho Dân Ngoại, Ngài đã hiến trọn cuộc sống mình cho việc rao giảng Tin Mừng cho Dân Ngoại. Ngay cả Phaolô bắt buộc phải trở lại Tarsê một thời gian ngắn là một thí dụ mà Thiên Chúa cắt tỉa vườn nho để đem tới mùa gặt lớn là đem Tin Mừng cho Dân Ngoại. Bài đọc thứ hai trích từ thư thứ nhất của Thánh Gioan Tông Ðồ cắt nghĩa rằng nếu chúng ta sống liên kết với Chúa Kitô bằng cách đặt Niềm Tin vào Chúa và nhận được sức mạnh thiêng liêng từ Ngài, chúng ta sẽ giữ các giới răn của Chúa, đặc biệt giới luật yêu thương. Trong bài Phúc Âm được trích từ Buổi Tiệc Ly, Chúa Giêsu dùng hình ảnh của cây nho và những cành nho giúp cho các môn đệ hiểu sự liên hệ thân mật của các ông với Chúa Giêsu là sự cần thiết để giữ vững niềm tin. Họ không có nghĩa là thầy trò và các môn sinh. Cuộc sống của họ là sự hỗ tương - thân thiết như là cây nho và cành nho. Vì thế khi dùng hình ảnh này, Chúa Giêsu cắt nghĩa cho chúng ta là sự tương quan của chúng ta đối với Chúa cũng giống như vậy.
Bài học mà chúng ta có thể học được từ tuần lễ này là: chúng ta cần phải cắt tỉa cuộc sống Kitô hữu của chúng ta. Cắt tỉa những gì mà trái với tinh thần của Chúa Giêsu và cùng cam kết với cuộc sống có ý nghĩa trong cuộc sống. Thứ hai là việc cắt tỉa những hành động tự cao về những cám dỗ và tội lỗi. Sống thân thiện với những người khác tôn giáo, màu da và dân tộc tính, bỏ qua những lối sống ích kỉ và đối xử với nhau bằng đức bác ái Công Giáo. Chúa Giêsu đã cắt tỉa và tẩy sạch và thêm sức mạnh cho chúng ta để chúng ta có thể đối diện với những đau khổ, nghịch cảnh và khó khăn với sự can đảm cho cuộc sống Kitô hữu. Chúng ta cần sống trong Chúa và để Chúa sống trong chúng ta. Bốn Sách Tin Mừng dạy chúng ta trở nên những môn đệ đích thực của Chúa Giêsu bằng cách sống trong Ngài như những cành cây với thân cây, và tiếp nhận sức sống từ nó để chúng ta cùng sinh hoa kết quả tốt.

¡Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo!
Esta semana, el martes 30 de abril, los vietnamitas recordarán 49 años desde que el país de Vietnam cayó bajo el régimen comunista. Oremos por el pueblo de Vietnam para que tengan libertad religiosa y derechos humanos básicos. Hay muchas personas hambrientas en Vietnam, y que el gobierno abra sus corazones y mentes para ayudar a esas personas que viven en situaciones desesperadas. Este sábado, 4 de mayo a las 6:30 pm, la comunidad vietnamita tendrá una Procesión Mariana para honrar a Nuestra Señora de La Vang durante el Mes de María. Mayo es el mes de María. Los invito a todos a rezar por la paz en el mundo, especialmente en Ucrania y en el Medio Oriente, para que las guerras puedan terminar. Por favor, continúen ayudando a nuestro Obispo con la PSA de 2024 y a nuestra parroquia. ¡Que el Señor, a través de la intercesión de Nuestra Señora de La Vang, les conceda paz, amor y alegría!
Las selecciones de las Escrituras de hoy enfatizan la necesidad de que los cristianos permanezcan en Cristo como una condición para producir frutos de bondad, misericordia, caridad y santidad. La primera lectura, tomada de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, da testimonio de la abundancia de frutos espirituales que dieron los apóstoles debido a su estrecho vínculo con el Señor resucitado. La lectura nos dice cómo el Señor podo al antiguo fariseo, Saulo de Tarso, un fanático que había perseguido a la Iglesia, para producir una rama fructífera llamada Pablo, el celoso Apóstol de los gentiles, totalmente dedicado a la proclamación del Evangelio. Incluso el regreso forzado de Pablo a Tarso por un breve período es un ejemplo de la poda de la vid por parte de Dios para producir una cosecha mayor, a saber, la misión a los gentiles. En la segunda lectura de hoy, Juan, en su primera carta a la Iglesia, explica que solo cuando permanezcamos unidos a Cristo poniendo nuestra fe en él y sacando nuestra fuerza espiritual de él, podremos obedecer los mandamientos de Dios, especialmente el mandamiento de amor. En el Evangelio, tomado del discurso de la Última Cena, Jesús usa su imagen favorita de la vid y las ramas para ayudar a sus discípulos a comprender la cercanía de su relación con él y la necesidad de mantenerla. No son simplemente rabinos y discípulos. Sus vidas son mutuamente dependientes, tan cerca como una vid y sus ramas. De hecho, al usar esta imagen, Jesús les está explicando a ellos y a nosotros cómo debería ser nuestra relación con él.
Las lecturas de esta semana nos dan los siguientes puntos para reflexionar. Necesitamos podar nuestras vidas cristianas. Cortar de nuestras vidas todo lo que es contrario al espíritu de Jesús y renovar nuestro compromiso con los ideales cristianos todos los días es el primer tipo de poda autoimpuesta que se espera de nosotros. Un segundo método de poda es practicar el autocontrol sobre nuestras inclinaciones malvadas, adicciones pecaminosas y aberraciones. La interacción cordial con personas de diferentes culturas, razas, religiones y orientaciones en nuestro vecindario y la sociedad nos permite eliminar nuestras tendencias egoístas y perjudiciales mientras tratamos a los demás en la sociedad con caridad y apertura cristianas. Jesús nos purifica y fortalece al permitirnos enfrentar el dolor y el sufrimiento, las contradicciones y las dificultades con el coraje de nuestras convicciones cristianas. Los cuatro Evangelios nos enseñan cómo llegar a ser verdaderos discípulos de Jesús y cómo permanecer en él mientras las ramas permanecen en el tronco principal de la vid, extrayendo su vida de ella.
